Installation Guides
New SmokeShield Installation Guide
With the publication of the revised Approved Document B (ADB) on
Fire safety, the guidance on the use of fire dampers in ventilation
ducts to protect fire compartmentation is now much clearer. It states
requirements for dampers to have ES classifications to protect escape
routes and areas with sleeping risk and that generally dampers should
have a minimum E classification for general areas and run out ducting.
To coincide with this Actionair has produced a new SmokeShield (and
HotShield) installation guide. It presents an introduction explaining
what changes have occurred and a summary of the presently tested installation
methods giving the E and ES classifications. This is followed by an
explanation section on the background to the ADB changes and the relevant
standards.
This is followed by a full two page description and drawing of each
method. Finally there is an appendix, which shows some of the installation
methods in terms of a storyboard with photographs.
Each of the sections/methods/storyboards are available as a download
from the website, as is the entire document (just follow the INSTALLATIONS
link). Hard copies are also available for you to keep as a reference
on your shelf.
It is strongly suggested that deviations from the methods given are
discussed with Building Control before use, if the requirements for
E and ES classifications exist. They should be able to make a judgment
that the proposed method is close enough to that tested to be able
to approve it.
It is still possible to use dampers tested to BS476 for installations
where the fan will be turned off in the case of a fire or smoke incident.
All the existing methods for installations meeting the requirements
for BS476 are still available on the website.
